Live or Pre-Recorded?

If you’re given the choice of doing a live or pre-recorded media interview, you should always opt for live. Here are three reasons why:

  1. Content control: An Allen Media Strategies client pre-recorded an appearance on ABC TV’s “Good Morning America. While the publicity was fantastic, the final aired piece edited out one of the key points our client felt was vitally important to their message.
  2. Better chance to steer: A pre-taped interview might be edited in post-production to eliminate references to your website, any product or service you’re plugging, etc.
  3. Less likely to be bumped: Pre-recorded packages are sometimes bumped from airing for ‘breaking news’. If you’re live, you KNOW it’s going on the air!

There are a couple of caveats; if you can’t control your environment during a live appearance window (for example, you’re traveling and will be in a noisy public area during the appearance time), you might opt to pre-record. Also, if pre-recording is the only option offered, then take it. Remember, this is free publicity, and a chance of you and your message airing is far better than no chance at all.
